Lichterhalterpaare, Engel und Bergmann, zählen zu den bekanntesten Symbolfiguren des Erzgebirges. Das Brauchtum der Engel und Bergmänner mit Kerzen in den Händen entstammt der täglichen Sorge, um die hart in den Minen des Erzgebirges arbeitenden Männer und dem Wunsch, ihnen einen sicheren Weg nach Hause zu weisen. Dabei stellen die Engelsfiguren den göttlichen Schutz dar, während die Bergmänner figürliche Abbilder der Söhne waren, die tagtäglich ihre Gesundheit und ihr Leben für die Familien riskierten. Sie sollen als Symbol Glück, Sicherheit und Schutz bringen.
Noch heute ist es im Erzgebirge Tradition, Söhnen Bergmänner und Töchtern Engel zu schenken, mit denen später Paare gebildet werden.
